On November 27th, the United States celebrates Thanksgiving.

The core focus of this holiday is gratitude. It’s about connecting with family and friends, and it’s about giving thanks for everything wonderful in life.
My friends Jenn Givler and Teresa Morrow were inspired to put together a really neat project in honor of this holiday.
As business owners, we are thankful that we, not only get to do what we love for a living, but that we get to connect with other wonderful business owners every day.
Teresa and Jenn asked 10 amazing business women to come together and help them create an inspirational screen saver. The screen saver consists of original, inspirational quotes set on beautiful nature pictures.
The purpose of the screen saver is to help inspire you throughout your day as you work toward your goals. We’re also hoping you’ll feel connected and among like-minds as you read through our quotes. And, we’d love it for you to meet some new people and make new connections as well!
The screen saver is available to you as my gift. To download your copy, simply log on to this web site: http://www.MindfulBusinessesPartner.com
While you’re on the site, be sure and check out the other great women who are part of this project!
The screen saver will only be available until December 12th, so be sure and get your copy!

November 23-29 is National Game and Puzzle Week - the Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter created “Game Plan” – a locally developed Red Cross educational card game about preparing for and responding to disasters and emergencies. When players answer questions correctly, they receive resources to survive disasters. Earthquakes and tsunamis are two of the 15 disasters highlighted in the game. What kind of “game” could you create to help your community and draw attention to your company?
Check out The Million Minute Family Challenge - an annual event sponsored by Patch Products, the company that publishes Blurt!, Malarky, Tribond, Talkin’ Tango and others. The goal of the event is to encourage families and friends to spend more time together playing board games. For some great game ideas, visit: Games Kids Play - Has 250 rules for games you played as a child.
People love games and puzzles. Small business owners who make it FUN to do business with, who create an experience for their clients and customers will stay top of mind especially when other businesses are in a downturn.

If you have a website (of course you do) then you may have already experienced the power of digital coupons to drive business to your site and even to your brick and mortar locale.
Even if you don’t have a website, chances are good that you have downloaded a digital coupon once or twice, or dozens of times if you are my daughters. In fact, when my girls have to go shopping for anything that costs more than $10 they first go online to see what coupons are available. When they eat out, they look to their favorite restaurants for coupons offers. They check out the shoe store, the technology stores, department stores, specialty stores and more. They never leave home without at least a handful of coupons to use on their shopping “sprees.”
According to a marketing research study conducted by ICOM Research, coupon redemption rates rise when prices and unemployment go up. Knowing that and the fact that 67 percent of US shoppers say they are more likely to use coupons during a recession, it may just make sense to have a coupon program in place on your website.
The study goes on to say that digital coupons tend to have a much higher usage rate than traditional paper coupons. It sited that 58% of consumers responding said their coupon use would increse if they could download it from the internet to an electronically swiped frequent shopper card.
My newly designed retail website ~ Eden Florist ~ has a mechanism in place when anyone becomes a new customer they get a coupon as a thank you. They can use the coupon on their current purchase online or at a later date.
And lets not forget mobile coupons that you can download to you mobile device. Hundreds of merchants around the globe are already offering these to their clients and customers. Mobile coupons are a great way to gain new customers, offer specials to current customers, and grow your existing database. Mobile coupons are also a great way to reach prospects because they have instant access to them and don’t have to download or cut out coupons. They just carry them around on their cell phone or PDA to use when they need them.
Coupons also make a good incentive to purchase early and avoid the rush. What kind of coupon could you offer your customers to encourage them to buy now instead of later? Digital coupons can make sense to small business especially with the high costs of being in business, doing business and living today.
Here’s a couple of sites with digital coupons offered by hundreds/thousands of merchants around the country: DealWorker.com and RetailMeNot. Check them out for ideas and of course to save money!

Last week Heidi Caswell of Connect Simply, and yours truly Heidi Richards Mooney did a teleseminar on follow up strategies in business.
Remember when you were young and started making friends or dating, you knew instinctively that if someone didn’t “make a move” you’d probably loose the opportunity to get to know that person better. And yet, when it comes to business we may understand the importance of “making a move” (follow up) but many times we simply don’t do it. In this session we talked about that and more.
Here are jsut a few of the ideas Heidi and I shared:
Follow up strategies, what works and what doesn’t
Why “high touch” marketing is so important especially today
When you should follow up with someone
One great strategy that always works ~ that strategy is greeting cards and postcards (I’ll write more later about how I am using it to promote all 3 of my businesses)
Stories of business owners who used that one strategy to really grow their business
And other great tips.
In fact, we are sharing this audio with the readers of Redhead Marketing Blog. Go here and grab your copy: www.redheadmarketingblog.com/audio/FollowUpDivas.mp3.
You can contact Heidi Caswell at www.ConnectSimply.com. Feel free to drop me a line at heidi (at) redheadmarketing.com if you’d like us to give you a personal tour of our Greeting Cards System.

What if there was a system that could help you develop a continuous stream of solid referrals and all you had to do is set it up one time, add contacts as you receive them and few clicks of the mouse start your referral building process?

October 6-12 is Customer Service Week is – Make appointments to visit customers this week and make sure you call and confirm those appointments. No matter what service business you are in, if you are not confirming appointments you may be losing business. Busy customers and clients often double book (they don’t have their calendar handy) or they have to rush off to another meeting. Confirming your appointments at least the day before you will notice less wasted time, more productivity –and increased sales.

If you haven’t yet read The Celebrity Experience: Insider Secrets to Delivering Red Carpet Customer Service by Donna Cutting, I highly recommend you check it out.

Wear Your Company on Your sleeve – or chest or purse or back…. Logo wear is coming back in style and if you are proud of your company wear it! You never know when you will be in the supermarket and someone will strike up a conversation and ask you about it. I have found my Shaklee distributor, my Mary Kay distributor, my dentist and my dog groomer this way….. Think of McDonalds – it is no accident that everyone in the company wears McDonalds attire. Its branding – brand recognition is especially important in a down economy because you want people to remember your name. I have had it happen over and over again where people have met me and forgotten the name of my company. So they called someone else. Don’t let that happen to you.
In one of my groups we have a person who sells promotional items – I will never forget her name or her company ~ Promo Girl because she wears her name on her sweater which is part of her 50’s attire – poodle skirt and all! When I need promotional items she is the first person to come to mind.

Take a class – something you enjoy and where you meet new people. When I took ballroom dancing a few years ago the instructor and every one in the class became a customer of mine. Many still are. My daughter and I also took golf lessons for a season. Many of those students (and the teacher) are also customers of mine. Try belly dancing, motorcycle riding, reading groups, golf lessons, community college courses, etc. Find something that interests you and where you can also meet potential clients.
Cross promote – Recently a New baby store sent a letter announcing their grand opening. We contacted them and now we are trading ad space in each others ezine and handing out one another’s flyers, brochures and promotions.

Is your business on the decline? Have you been looking for business in all the wrong places? Can’t compete with the “big guys” because you just don’t have the budget to pour into an advertising campaign to build your brand? Do what Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer did… Pour your advertising and marketing dollars into sponsoring subcultural events.

According to Marketing Sherpa.com, Pabst did just that and in 2003 they experienced a 15% increase in market share after a 20 year loss of almost 90% of its volume.
According to Neil Stewart, Senior Brand Manager for Pabst Blue Ribbon “We went for driving word of mouth and buzz,” They did this by sponsoring local musicians and events in specific markets. These events included fashion shows, kickball and dodgeball tournaments, art exhibits and scooter rallies. Pabst would support the events by donating beer (if permissible) and/or money to help them print fliers.
Over time, the Blue Ribbon brand developed a network of ambassadors to further help promote Pabst.
Before you consider sponsoring events like these, the article suggests you ask the right questions: They include finding out whose heard of the event, how fun it will be, who has sponsored in the past, how unique the event is and how much buzz it will create in the community.
